What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a wonderful, holistic treatment which is usually applied to the feet and hands. It is an extremely versatile therapy as it can be adapted to suit each individual needs, for example, the treatment time can be shortened or the pressure used can be firmer or lighter, therefore it is suitable to use on all age groups.

There is nothing new about reflexology in fact there is evidence of wall paintings discovered in Egypt that date back to 2330 BC.

The aim of reflexology is to treat the whole person – body mind and spirit, to encourage relaxation, so that the body can naturally heal itself. Stress is the root cause of a lot of illness and this is often the reason why people turn to complimentary therapies, they are often at the end of their tether and have tried everything else.

Reflexology is based on ten energy zones in the body, which ascend from the base of the feet to the top of the head. Zone therapy was discovered by Dr FitzGerald in the late 19th Century and is still used today in reflexology.

There are many different schools of reflexology using differing techniques, the method that we will be following is from the British School of Reflexology which was founded by Ann Gillanders over 26 years ago.
